Andrea Mikyska is a new media artist whose work intricately blends visual research with technology, nature, and sustainability. Her practice employs techniques such as adaptation, evolution, dream scenarios, and mutation to explore concepts of materiality, shape, and time through what she describes as reverse archaeology. Her current project, "The Godless Milieu," delves into a mystical universe where life is continuously reshaped through imagination and constant transformation. The project’s aesthetic and thematic focus is on plant surgery and Neosurrealism, striking a balance between comprehension and final form, skeleton and void. Mikyska designs life armor for plants and organisms, which are then replicated as 3D models or reborn into virtual environments. "The Godless Milieu" creates a free and opportunity-rich space where identities can be altered, changed, or reimagined, reflecting modern life’s tensions between technological optimism and fears of a machine-dominated future. Mikyska’s work proposes new alliances between species and worlds colonized by hybrid beings, dramatically altered by technological pressures. She examines the role of humans in relation to plants and the broader biosphere, aiming to celebrate a new communion with non-human entities and to cultivate kinship between the organic and inorganic, the living and the non-living. Her project includes animations and visuals inspired by natural imagery and contemporary visual technologies. "The Godless Milieu" (2022) features a collection of digital images created through 3D scans of Central European landscapes and 3D modeling, transforming these elements into novel formations. This work underscores the relationship between the study of nature, the celebration of technology, and the pursuit of sustainability, reflecting her investigation into reverse archaeology and the capture of material and structure.
